Sometimes a movie has a twist that makes it better.  But sometimes the twist just adds confusion and this is the problem with “Some Girls.”  The movie starts off as a light-hearted comedy with an 80’s feel to it but then introduces a supernatural tinge that doesn’t seem to quite fit.

The movie starts off predictably as Michael (Patrick Dempsey) spends the Christmas holidays with his ex-girlfriend Gabriella D’Arc (Jennifer Connelly, young Deborah in “Once Upon A Time in America”) and travels to her family’s residence in Quebec, Canada.   But Gabriella’s maternal grandmother thinks Michael is the reincarnate of her deceased husband, who was also named Michael.  You first write this off to her senility but as the movie progresses, it leaves you wondering if there’s something more to it than that.  The D’Arc house is huge and doesn’t seem to be very well lit, adding to the somewhat supernatural ambiance.  The oddities of the family are somewhat bizarre; Gabriella’s father is an author working on a book on Blaise Pascal but he’s always walking around without clothes because he can’t write unless he is naked.  And since Gabriella’s sisters are just as beautiful as her, Michael is conflicted as he desires them as much as Gabriella herself.  Through all this, Michael attempt to rekindle the romance with Gabriella has predictable results.   At the end of the movie though, you become skeptical as Michael is left with a profound understanding from Gabriella’s grandmother.

This is a mediocre movie with a twist that doesn’t add a surprise but rather confusion.   The only draw is to see the beautiful Jennifer Connelly on screen.  There are better movies out there though.

Why you should or should not see this movie:

If you are a big Jennifer Connelly fan and want to see every one of her movie, then this is one of her lesser-known movies that you need to see.  Otherwise, you shouldn’t see this movie because it’s not very funny or entertaining.
